2019 Fun Troll Loppet Report

By Conrad Brattebo

The annual fun Troll Loppet was held on Sunday January 20th, starting from the Viking Centre at Mud Lake at 10:00 a.m.  The temperature was 4 C with a mix of sun and cloud.  A good, and best participant turnout yet of 162!  The Viking Troll from the Vallhalla Mountains was there to protect the younger skiers and also to start the famous Norwegian friendly Troll Loppet Race!

A very big THANK YOU to the Castlegar Tim Hortons, Safeway and Mallard's Source For Sports for all their generous donations.

The Loppet starting order was: first the longest - 40km, then the 30km, then the 20km, then the 10km, then the small kids - 2 km!  All skiers start in their age group and the length they’d like to race.  This is a race you personally like to do and enjoy and you set your own timing.  Every skier gets a prize!

There is a lot of work and time spent to have this Loppet every year, by everyone including volunteer Kim Matson, long time club President Winston Fayant, his super hard working Executive and many volunteer club members.

There were skiers from the West and East Kootenay, Rossland Blackjack, Washington state and many more.  The best friendly time for the 40km route was 3hrs and 1minute by Travis Hauck.  Pretty good!!!  A big winner of a $25.00 gift from Mallard's Source For Sports was a small proud skier named Haydon Hall.

Kim Matson was the Coordinator for the race, and with her assistants, did a fabulous job.  Thank you!!  The Ski Club member ladies put in a lot of work with goodies, juices, fruit and more.  There was also hot chocolate drinks for all the kids - and they loved it too!!  Also the grown kids!

As a point of interest, the Viking Centre was built in 2004 and the club has 4 other nice shelters.  Our ski club is one of the largest in B.C., with membership up to 800 family members some years.  The trails have some of the earliest and best ski conditions, and super tracks (45km) in western Canada!

Thanks to you all from the Castlegar Nordic Ski Club Historian and the Viking Troll, Conrad J. Brattebo.
